I discovered these little cakes for the first time in April for French Fridays with Dorie, the online cooking club that makes one recipe a week from Dorie Greenspan's fantastic Around My French Table cookbook.
In France, these cakes (often mistaken for pastry) are called financiers. They are traditionally rectangular and are similar to a teacake or sponge cake. The cakes go by the name of friands in Australia and New Zealand and have additional flavoring, such as the coconut in this particular recipe.
I became an instant fan of these sweet little cakes!
